Chevrolet Celta

The Chevrolet Celta (Suzuki Fun in Argentina) is an inexpensive supermini car produced by Chevrolet in Brazil for Latin America. Rivals are the Fiat Palio and Volkswagen Gol.

It was released in 2000 in Brazil as a three-door hatchback with a 60 hp 1.0L gasoline engine. In 2002 a five-door was available, and the engine power was increased to 70 hp at 6,400 r.p.m.; a 1.4L engine was added in 2003. This year an "Off-Road" accessories kit was for sale for both old and new Celtas, and the 1.0 was converted into a flexible fuel engine (gasoline versions are still available, both in and specially outside Brazil). The VHC (Very High Compression) engine is the same used in Chevrolet Corsa.

500,000 Celtas were built in Gravataí, around one hundred thousand per year. It is the second cheapest car sold in Brazil, losing only to the Fiat Uno Mille.

Car details

The 1.0L gasoline engine has a high power, considering the low engine displacement. However, this power is only available at 6,400 r.p.m., not being used in the city traffic. At 3,000 r.p.m., it has only about 50 hp. The torque is 86 kgfm (8.8 Nm) at 3,000 r.p.m.

The design is based in the Opel Vectra, specially in the front. The platform is the same used in the Chevrolet Corsa and in the Chevrolet Meriva.

The total weight is approximatedely 1,100 kg (2,300 lb).
