Death Becomes Her is a 1992 black comedy film directed by Robert Zemeckis, co-starring Goldie Hawn, Meryl Streep and Bruce Willis. It won an Academy Award for Best Visual Effects.
Plot synopsis
Madeline (Streep) and Helen (Hawn) are romantic rivals for the affection of former cosmetic surgeon Ernest (Willis). Both women are desperate to overcome the aging process and, unknown to each other, they take a magical potion that makes them young again. The potion allows them to live forever... with one small problem: they continue to live despite any injury. They become increasingly reliant on Ernest to patch up their broken bodies.
Of note is the final scene in the film, set decades in the future as Madeline and Helen attend Ernest's funeral. It is apparent that Ernest has achieved far more in his (mortal) life than Madeline and Helen ever will in their self-centered immortality.
Trivia
- Catherine Bell makes her movie debut in this film as Isabella Rossellini's body double, for which she was given a rare credit.
- Helen takes the potion on October 26, 1985. This is the same day as the "present" date used in Back To The Future (also directed by Robert Zemeckis).
- The film has been noted for its deliberately Hitchcockian elements, such as its use of a blonde protagonist and the dark visuals. Composer Alan Silvestri's score is also similar to Bernard Herrmann's work for Hitchcock.
